Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin brengt de opwinding die wij ervoeren bij ons bezoek treffend onder woorden: “Every year there is a domaine that excites more than any other, a new name that seems to sparkle that much brighter, someone who intuition tells you is about to hit the big time. I experienced this feeling when Maxime Cheurlin took the reins at domaine Georges Noëllat, when Amélie Berthaut took over Domaine Denis Berthaut and when I first visited Pierre Duroché. Even though I had tasted recent vintages in London earlier this year with Charles Lachaux, my tasting at the domaine in Vosne-Romanée was still an eye-opener and one of the most memorable.” … “This was a deeply impressive showing of 2017s where you can easily see the influence of Lalou Bize-Leroy. There is immense purity and panache, the use of whole bunches assiduous and carefully managed. The shorter maceration period means that Lachaux has to be prudent with respect to the percentage of whole bunch, so as not to obscure vineyard expression. He certainly achieved that this year with a raft of really fabulous, quite intellectual yet delicious wines. The good news is that the quality is evident throughout the range. Why not pick up a case of 2017 Bourgogne Pinot Fin to experience Lachaux’s style first-hand? Otherwise, seek out the stunning Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots or les Suchots, maybe one of the best Clos Vougeots of the vintage, or the sublime Latricières-Chambertin.”

  1. Bourgogne Pinot Fin I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Bourgogne Pinot Fin is a blend of several vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny and others located between Vosne-Romanée and Nuits Saint Georges. It includes 70% whole bunches. The very fine bouquet features quite intense red cherries and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet tannin, a core of fleshy sorbet-fresh red fruit and a touch of spice on the finish. It just misses a little length, but otherwise, it’s impressive." Lees verder

  2. Nuits-Saint-Georges I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village is a blend of several vineyards that offer homogeneous ripeness but on different soils. It has quite an earthy, sous-boistinged bouquet that is very well defined, the 60% whole bunches nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart opening, and the 10% new oak lends discreet lift toward a persistent finish spiced with a dash of black pepper. Excellent." Lees verder

  3. Chambolle-Musigny I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from north-facing vineyards toward the upper slopes – the last vines to ripen, as they can lie in the shade. Containing 80% whole bunch fruit, it has a well-defined, slightly tertiary bouquet with touches of black pepper and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate presents fresh red fruit, lightly spiced with white pepper, sage and a touch of tobacco, perhaps a little Morey-like in structure, but with a very long finish. Excellent." 4. Vosne-Romanée I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "Containing 70% whole bunches, the 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of Les Communes, Les Saules and Bossières. It has a very floral bouquet, with wilted rose petals infusing the brambly red fruit, and hints of lavender tucked in just beneath. The medium-bodied palate is strict and linear, offering quite firm tannin and perhaps just requiring a little more finesse toward the finish at the moment. This is quite an uncompromising Village Cru, but intellectually it is very satisfying." Lees verder

  5. Nuits-Saint-Georges 'les Poisets' I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Poisets has quite a rich bouquet compared to the other crus from Arnoux-Lachaux, offering bilberry and raspberry aromas and just a touch of iris. The stocky palate displays a firm backbone and plenty of sous-bois, here mixed with tobacco and spice, though it pulls up a little short on the finish. Fine." Lees verder

  6. Vosne-Romanée 'Les Hautes-Mazières' I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières, from vines that more or less back onto the walls of Clos Vougeot, contains 80% whole bunches. The harmonious bouquet of red currant and cranberry fruit reveals touches of crushed stone and forest floor. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, a perfect line of acidity and beautiful focus, plus a tang of spice toward the structured finish. Superb." Lees verder

  7. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Procès I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Procès, which includes 50% whole bunches, has a very feminine, pure red cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet that develops flinty scents with aeration. The medium-bodied palate displays supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, and feels quite compact toward the finish; it will benefit from two or three years in bottle. Excellent." Lees verder

  8. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Corvée Pagets I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Corvées Pagets 1er Cru is 100% whole bunches. It has a very intense bouquet of brambly red fruit, briar, wild heather and light crushed rock aromas; more tertiary scents (damp moss?) emerge with time. The medium-bodied palate features supple tannin and just a slight lactic tincture on the entry, layers of tart red fruit infused with minerals and even a cheeky hint of Turkish Delight on the finish. This feels very long and tender." Lees verder

  9. Vosne-Romanée 1er cru Les Chaumes I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru comes from the middle of a vineyard that traverses from top to bottom of the incline; this vintage contains around 50% whole bunches. It has a gorgeous bouquet with red currant, cranberry and light mineral notes, hints of bergamot and vervain tea emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannin, fine acidity and quite an insistent grip. The salinity floods through this Vosne-Romanée on the finish. Superb." Lees verder

  10. Vosne-Roamnée 1er Cru Aux Reignots I Arnoux-Lachaux

Burgundy Report: "100% whole clusters in the fermentation and 80% new oak elevage. A wide nose that suggests malo to me but it was finished in May – so let’s say ‘herb’ – plenty of whole cluster references too. Full and round in the mouth but absolutely dynamic too. Extra concentration in the mid-palate before slowly fading. Good…" Lees verder

  11. Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has quite a reticent bouquet at first and demands a lot of coaxing. Eventually it reveals a mixture of red and black fruit, mixed with potpourri and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, hints of espresso infusing the red fruit, and the 100% whole bunches lending a touch of Moroccan spice toward the long finish. This is a Suchots with pedigree." Lees verder

  12. Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is 60% whole bunch fruit. It has a very natural, precise bouquet of almost crystalline red fruit infused with crushed stone, all correct and very focused. The well-balanced, tensile palate offers fresh acidity and an infectious sense of energy. Why can’t all Clos Vougeot be as refined and enthralling as this? Outstanding." Lees verder

  13. Echezeaux Grand Cru I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from a 1.09-hectare parcel in the lieu-dit of Rouge de Bas; this cru includes 100% whole bunches. It has a tightly wound bouquet at first, gradually unfurling to reveal quite intense dark berry fruit laced with tea leaves and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, crisp acidity, quite a masculine style and a stoic, rather aloof finish that might just require more flesh to counter the influence of the whole bunch stems. Let’s see how this matures in bottle." Lees verder

  14. Latrichières-Chambertin Grand Cru I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, which includes 100% whole bunches, was 50% reduced by hail and thus cropped at 18hl/ha. It has a very attractive bouquet with more black fruit than red, hints of tobacco and vervain tea and an almost granitic aroma underneath. The palate is beautifully balanced and quite savory in style, suggesting touches of meat juices infusing the red berry fruit. This feels very natural but is certainly one of the most powerful crus from the domaine on the finish. Superb." Lees verder

  15. Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru I Arnoux-Lachaux

Neal Martin: "The 2017 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is 100% whole bunches, matured in 25% new oak. The disarmingly pure bouquet features an extraordinary pure floral perfume, violet and iris intermingling, and mainly red fruit but with veins of blue. The palate is silky-smooth with fine-grained tannin, hints of dark chocolate infusing the dark berry fruit, and perhaps even a hint of salted licorice toward a finish that fans out with self-assurance. This is going to be utterly sublime." Lees verder
