Bernhard Huber

  1. Spätburgunder "Malterdingen" I Bernhard Huber

The wine Advocate: 'From 22-year-old vines on loess and shell limestone soils, the cherry colored 2014 Malterdinger Spätburgunder trocken opens with a very clear, bright and spicy bouquet of wild red berries, cherries and beautiful earthy flavors. Medium to full-bodied, fruit-intense and vital on the palate, this is a very elegant, aromatic and silky textured Pinot in perfect balance. The acidity is remarkably fine and the finish, though still a very little bit reductive, is pure, dry, fresh and beautifully aromatic. This is an impressive village wine from Baden's Breisgau subregion. There is just a hint of toast and mocha flavors in the aftertaste.' Lees verder

  2. Chardonnay I Bernhard Huber

The Wine Advocate: 'Huber's 2014 Chardonnay has a clear, deep, elegant and slightly smoky bouquet of ripe Chardonnay berries with butterscotch and buttercup flavors as well as crushed limestones. Full-bodied, intense and elegant on the palate, this is a rich, but vibrantly fresh, mineral and structured Chardonnay with a long, powerful, tightly woven and salty finish that reveals a certain reductive character but also very good potential. Excellent!' Lees verder

  3. Spatburgunder "Alte Reben" I Bernard Huber

Huber's 2014 Spatburgunder Alte Reben is a barrel selection from younger vines in the best vineyards. Fermented with roughly 40% whole clusters and aged in barriques, the 2014 offers an intense, fresh and spicy bouquet. The nose has some toasty/oaky flavors, but a very nice freshness from the stems. Silky, round and fresh on the palate, this cassis-fruited wine reveals a nice concentration and juiciness, with very nice grip in the firmly structured finish. The tannins are still somewhat harsh, but the wine is dry, straight and characterful. It will improve over the next several years. Lees verder

  4. Spatburgunder "Bienenberg" Grosse Gewächse I Bernard Huber

Jancis Robinson: "Smoky, chocolatey - outspoken and particular with a type of varnish note that I like, perhaps from some volatile acidity. Surely peculiar and screwball - and why not? It reminds me of some distinctive Burgundy grand crus - especially Clos des Lambrays. (RH)" Lees verder

  5. Spatburgunder "Sommerhalde" Grosse Gewächse" I Bernard Huber

Antonio Galloni: "Dark ruby. Ripe aromas of bitter cherry, honeysuckle and cured beef. Concentrated yet suave, with dark berry and wild spice flavors offering a gentle sweetness. Quite Burgundian in the way it combines density and weight with tang and verve. Finishes elegantly, with nicely balanced tannins." Lees verder

  6. Spatburgunder "Bienenberg" Grosse Gewächse I Bernard Huber

The wine Advocate: 'From 60+-year-old vines (German Spätburgunder clones), Huber's 2014 Bienenberg Spätburgunder GG displays a deep, ripe, slightly toasty and still a bit reductive bouquet of red berries, cherries, nougat and earthy flavors. Full-bodied, pure, fresh and finessed, this is a silky textured, tension-filled and firmly structured Pinot with fine tannins and clear, straight fruit with beetroot, red cabbage and chocolate flavors in the finish. This is a very delicate, still young and oaky Pinot that will improve over the next few years.' Lees verder

  7. Spätburgunder "Schlossberg Grosse Gewächse" I Bernard Huber

Jancis Robinson: 'None of Huber’s Grosse Gewächse are short of fruit, but although the Schlossberg exhibits its fair fragrance of plums and blackberries, they merely act in support of a darker and deeper minerally expression. Shaved pencil, graphite and forest undergrowth represent a most intriguing and almost mysterious composition of aromas. On the palate the fruit of dark berries insists on its juicy ways, supported by fine spices, but then a cool stony notion takes command. Compact structure, full body and firm grip demand to be given time to agree on harmony. 18/20' Lees verder

  8. Spätburgunder "Schlossberg Grosse Gewächse" I Bernard Huber

Jancis Robinson: 'Medium intensity cherry red with plummy shades on the rim. Dark berry fruit struggling a little to get through against strong competition from flinty minerality and toasted spices. The palate proves that it has the substance, with acidity and tannins quite prominent at this early stage, but successfully challenged by a pronounced salty expression of minerality. Cool and animating. (MS)' Lees verder

  9. Spätburgunder "Wildenstein" Grosse Gewächse I Bernhard Huber

The Wine Advocate: 'Huber's 2013 Wildenstein Spätburgunder GG (Blaufränkisch fans, this could be your Pinot Noir!) opens clear, deep and flinty on the nose, with dark and spicy fruit, as well as licorice aromas. Full-bodied and silky, but tight in the mouth, this is a complex, firm, refreshing and salty Pinot Noir. It is pretty complex and firmly structured, with self-confident tannins, a persistent fruit and nice grip in the terrifically aromatic finish. Still young, but very promising.' Lees verder
