Domaine Maume by Tawse

Jasper Moris: "Bertrand Maume and his colleagues from Marchand-Tawse now assist in the winemaking process since Moray Tawse bought the domaine in 2011. Bertrand was at the helm of Domaine Maume in Burgundy from 1991 until 2011 in succession to his father Bernard. The wines are still recognisably in the same style, though perhaps the firmness of the tannins has been ameliorated by slightly fuller fruit. Almost every year there is a technical modification to improve quality, whether it be a pneumatic press (1999) sorting table (2001) or destalking the grapes without crushing (2005). The grapes are now cooled before the fermentation gets under way, spending three to four weeks in the vats with both punching down and pumping over. The wines are then matured for up to 22 months without racking and they are neither fined nor filtered before bottling. The Maumes see their wines falling into two groups: Etelois, Champeaux and Charmes are pretty and succulent, thus requiring oak from Jupilles or Troncais in the hands of coopers who specialise in finesse. En Pallud, the premier cru cuvée and Mazis-Chambertin have more rugged frames and need the firmer hand of Nevers wood from (e.g.) Berthomieu. while Lavaux is between the two, tending one way or the other according to vintage."

  1. Gevrey-Chambertin I Maume by Tawse

Neal Martin: "Winemaker Mark Fincham told me that the 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Village was the only cuvée that had been racked and it was matured in 20% new oak. It has a very pleasant bouquet, very well defined with vivid morello cherry and kirsch aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red cherry and strawberry fruit. It feels pleasantly saline in the mouth with plenty of freshness on the finish. This is worth checking out, folks!" Lees verder

  2. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Corvées Pagets I Marchand-Tawse

The Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Nuit Saint Georges 1er Cru Corvées Pagets was matured with 100% whole bunch fruit with no new oak. There was a subtle ferrous scent on the nose here, perhaps just a little more rustic than Marchand-Tawse's other crus, although it is well defined and seems to gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, the active limestone coming through and leaving the tongue tingling long after the wine has departed. This is very fine and should drink a little earlier than others." Lees verder

  3. Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux I Maume by Tawse

The Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux, which includes 40% whole bunch (the first time that is has been used in this cuvée) and 50% new oak, has a very well-defined and focused bouquet with fine mineralité coming through the transparent red berry fruit. There is great terroir expression here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, and though it does not quite have the depth of the Lavaux Saint-Jacques, it carries the oak easily on the finish and presents impressive length." 4. Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru I Maume by Tawse

The Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, which includes 40% stems, has a gorgeous, engaging bouquet with a conspicuous oyster shell/marine influence running through the crystalline red berry fruit. There is outstanding aromatics, tension and energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, harmonious and candied with finer tannin than the Mazoyères-Chambertin that one used to find with Bertrand Maume's wines, blessed with superb salinity and precision on the finish. This is a brilliant wine from Domaine Tawse, probably the best that has been made under the new ownership. 96-98 points" Lees verder
