Gerard Julien & Fils

Om Steen Öhman te citeren: “As I taste these wines … from the 2013 vintage and onwards, I have started to appreciate or should I say enjoy the inner quality of these wines more and more. What is immediately charming also has a tremendous depth and a inner radiance of balance and verve. The fruit seem to have another natural depth and tension than wines from many other producers.”

  1. Côte de Nuits-Villages I Gerard Julien & Fils

Öhman; "Côte de Nuits villages – made from plots located in the Comblanchien appellation. This is – like the rest of the 2016s biased towards red fruits – compared to the more weighty 2015s. This is also in the 2016 edition a very juicy and attractive wine with a lively and pure fruit. The nose is currently slightly reductive – but offering a selection of red and darker fruits – supported by a fine lime-stony minerality. On the palate delightfully juicy – energetic with good weight and concentration. I do like the wines from the Comblanchien area – often offering very good value. To be honest different but quite evenly matched by the 2015. Good++" Lees verder

  2. Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Aux Saints-Juliens' I Gerard Julien & Fils

Öhman; "Moving on to one of my favourites … the Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Saints-Juliens – a village terroir located in the northern part of Nuits-Saint-Georges – below the Combe leading towards Vergy. This is a very interesting terroir that produces a very playful and vibrant NSG village. The bouquet is brimming with red and dark berries – detailed and vibrant. On the palate very juicy and vibrant fruit – lighter than the 2015 – with some fresh notes of pomegranate. This has a gorgeous expression and while it’s not on the Vosne edge – it does offer a lovely sensuality and drinkability. Very Good+" Lees verder

  3. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Bousselots

Öhman: "Next up the equally interesting … one do feel a strong familiarity between these terroirs – the Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Bousselots. This is perhaps not quite matching the magnificant 2015 – although this cool, energetic and juicy 1er cru is really a treat. The bouquet offer a gorgeous selection of cool red berries .. lovely tension .. with a refined and quite filigree minerality. On the palate intense and playful fruit – vibrant and effortless. This is a cool wine … drinking tremendously well. Do I prefer this to the bigger 2015? – I think I need to taste them both a few times more Fine++ (92 – 93p)." Lees verder

  4. Echezeaux Grand Cru I Gerard Julien & Fils

Öhman: 'The Echezeaux is the star of the vintage at Domaine Julien. The yields of Echezeaux really suffered from the April frost, and as a consequence they have delivered some very intense wines. It’s matching the intensity of the 2015 but in a cooler and more vibrant way, and the oak seems already better integrated. The nose offer layers of red and darker fruit – detailed and vibrant with tremendous depth. On the palate intense and long with a lovely verve and energy. While I do like the rest of the lineup and the 2015s – this is perhaps the strongest effort I have tasted from Domaine Julien so far. Chapeau Étienne! Outstanding' Lees verder
