Robert Groffier

  1. Bourgogne Passetoutgrains I Robert Groffier

Öhman: ‘The Bourgogne Passe-tout-grains is from the Morey side – the estate may be located in Morey, but only the lesser wines are produced close to home turf. The Passe-tout-grains is a lovely forward wine – 1/3 Gamay – a nice mix of red and dark fruits – juicy, pure and with a fine energy. Style wise a nice introduction to the Groffier range. A lovely glass!’ Vinous: ‘The estate's Passetoutgrains, which includes one-third Gamay, is also a winner in 2016, offering juicy, savory red fruit aromas and flavors and a firm finish.’ Lees verder

  2. Bourgogne Pinot Noir I Robert Groffier

Öhman: ‘The Bourgogne Rouge is a step up in refinement – 2/3 from the vineyards below Clos de Vougeot. It’s forward and pure offering a finely detailed bouquet – pretty and enjoyable. On the palate fine length and weight for this level – fruit is energetic offering a good depth. A very enjoyable wine ..’ Vinous: ‘Good medium red. Spicy red fruits complicated by soil nuances on the nose. Showed a captivating red cherry perfume with air, along with harmonious acidity and considerable finesse. Finishes juicy and firmly tannic, with noteworthy floral persistence for its appellation. Groffier told me he did no extraction at all for half of this cuvée. As in many past vintages, this should make a serious Bourgogne and yet it also conveys a relaxed quality.’ Lees verder

  3. Gevrey-Chambertin 'Les Seuvrées' I Robert Groffier

Öhman: ‘The Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees is from a plot located below Charmes-Chambertin and the main road. It’s a quite generous village with plenty of fruit – yet quite detailed and delicate in the hands of Nicolas Groffier. The 50% whole cluster and 15% new oak works well on this terroir – as it yields an expressive and quite forward wine – with considerable charm. A lovely village in the making.’ Vinous: ‘(Groffier vinified with 50% whole clusters but says he did no extraction; aged in 25% new oak): Bright medium red. Lively scents of black raspberry and menthol lifted by a violet topnote. Suave, pure, balanced village wine with perfumed blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors; shows modest flesh and depth but this is silky and delicious and should give early pleasure.’ Lees verder

  4. Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Hauts Doix I Robert Groffier

Öhman: ‘To one of my favourite wines chez Groffier – the charming and delicate Les Hauts Doix – located just north of Les Amoureuses alongside the road between Chambolle and Vougeot. This is Burgundian charm bottled – and give it some years in the cellar – and you will be generously rewarded. This is made with 40 – 60% whole cluster and 1/3 new oak – a hedonistic treat. The nose is forward and detailed – juicy red fruit – transparent with a nice view to the rather delicate minerality of this lovely but somewhat overlooked terroir. On the palate very good intensity for this terroir offering a lovely energy – with plenty of juicy fruit. A tremendous Hauts Doix – one of the most promising I have tasted so far from Groffier.’ Tim Atkin: ‘Considered, at least by me, as a poor man’s Les Amoureuses, this is less intense than the latter Premier Cru but has some of its finesse and chalky freshness. Scented, elegant and vivacious, with classic summer pudding flavours, a hint of clove spice and a long, refined finish. 2024-30’ Lees verder

  5. Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers I Robert Groffier

Öhman: ‘The Chambolle Les Sentiers comes from 80 year old vines. Sentiers is located below Bonnes Mares on the Morey side of Chambolle, and is a more serious terroir than the forward and sexy Les Hauts Doix. Nicolas have used 100% whole clusters here to express the terroir – nevertheless this is a wine that deserves time in the cellar – while you are drinking cases of the Les Hauts Doix! The bouquet is quite forward with variations of red and dark berries – juicy with a earthy minerality present. On the palate deep and quite weighty fruit – one sense the relatively deep clay soil. The mid-palate is gorgeous with a fine tension and playfulness – presumably quite a share of millerandage grapes from the old vines. A magnificent 1er cru – but give it time!’ Tim Atkin: ‘The berries were so small from this one-hectare parcel terroir in 2016 that Nicolas Groffier decided not to remove any stems, doing 100% whole bunch fermentation. The result is a stunning wine of great complexity: perfumed and graceful with a gentle touch in the cellar. Fresh and athletic with subtle spices and amazing length. 2024-34’ Lees verder

  6. Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses I Robert Groffier

Öhman: ‘Les Amoureuses – the Audrey Hepburn of Burgundy – gorgeous, intellectual and delicate … The 2016 from Groffier is certainly a beauty – and fully explain why this 1er cru reach Grand Cru prices. The Groffier Amoureuses is made from the largest holdings of Les Amoureuses – that includes both areas with shallow limestone soil higher on the slope, and more rich and deeper soil at the bottom of Les Amoureuses. This gives a very complete and perhaps more weighty Les Amoureuses – than the wines produced from the plots at the top of the slope where the soil is very shallow. It’s hedonistic with the bouquet offering plenty of fruit – layers of red and dark fruits – infused with limestone minerality. On the palate layers of rich and generous fruit – ample yet very elegant – with a very fine mineral backbone as a focusing element. YES bring it on!’ Tim Atkin: ‘The Groffiers’ five parcels of Les Amoureuses escaped the frost in 2016, which is fortunate for the many devotees of this wine. Made with less (15%) new oak than the 2015, and only 60% whole clusters, it’s a Premier Cru Pinot that’s driven by acidity, with delicate rose petal aromas, fine tannins and a long, effortlessly classy finish. 2026-36’ Lees verder

  7. Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru I Robert Groffier

Öhman: ‘The Bonnes Mares is a treat – and one of my favourites from this large vineyard. Nicolas is now using 100% whole cluster and only 33% new – which translates into a floral and vibrant Bonnes Mares. The plot is located in the core of Bonnes Mares – slightly towards the Morey end – an impressive 1 ha plot!!. The nose is floral and expressive with plenty of detail and refinement. On the palate juicy, vibrant and energetic fruit – tremendous depth and a substantial weight. A very elegant Bonnes Mares – a great source for Bonnes Mares after Nicolas adjusted the style around 2010.’ Tim Atkin: ‘Sourced from a mixture of white and (mostly) red soils on the Chambolle side of the Grand Cru, this shows the effortless concentration of an 80-year-old vineyard. Fermented with 100% stems, like most of the top Groffier reds in 2016, it’s silky and elegant yet with considerable underlying punch and power. One of my favourite wines of the vintage. 2026-36’ Lees verder

  8. Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru I Robert Groffier

As with the other top wines Nicolas used 100% whole cluster in this wine – but here the percentage of new oak is 100% … as this is a very substantial wine. This combination works well – and this is clearly a wine for cellaring, although one easily could be tempted earlier by it’s whole cluster charm. The nose is bursting with layers of juicy red and dark berries – brought forward by a quite intense mineral note from this mighty terroir. On the palate intense fruit and powerful minerality – impressive weight and depth. It’s however also both elegant and quite seductive … what a wine!’ Tim Atkin: ‘This wine can be summed up in three centuries: 100% new oak, whole bunches and the age of the parcel. It’s another triumphant 2016 from Nicolas Groffier, with everything in place and remarkable poise and balance. The oak is deftly integrated, the whole bunches noticeable but not too marked, the fruit floral, complex and savoury with sweetness and crunchy, mouth-watering acidity. 2026-40’ Lees verder
